Vinyl Feature: Supertramp - Breakfast in America

An absolute classic of an album by British rock band Supertramp! I ordered this as an unsighted second hand purchase on-line from a dealer in Germany through Amazon and even though it said it was in "very good" condition I really didn't know what to expect. I was therefore very pleasantly relieved when it finally came and after opening it it looked very good, which was confirmed a few minutes later when I listened to it for the first time. It sounds brilliant!

Breakfast in America was Supertramps sixth album and was released on 29 March 1979 by A&M Records.

Why Vinyl?

Audio Technica AT95e - My First Thoughts

As it arrived in it's plastic container.

It's the time of the year for a new stylus, but my personal finances being a little tight right now I decided that a cheaper cartridge is better than a worn cartridge and after an extensive stint of internet research I chose the ultra cheapie Audio Technica AT95e to replace my Rega Elys cartridge.

I settled on the green plastic fantastic AT95e simply because I kept reading very good things about it with terms like "punches well above it's weight" and "strong performer" constantly used to describe it's performance. Also in Europe it costs about €25 via Amazon which is around $30 in American money and who can't afford that?

Vinyl Feature: Phil Collins - Sussudio (single)

Today at the Vinyl Philosophy listening labs we are spinning some 7" singles and I picked up this beauty from the Red Cross charity shop a couple of days ago.

Phil Collins released the Sussudio single in February 1985 and it was also the first track off his third album No Jacket Required which was released in January of the same year. It sold rather well for him reaching number 1 on the US charts and peaking in the top 10 charts of many countries around the World.

Mine is the UK copy released under the Virgin label and had The Man with the Horn on the B side. In the US it had I Like the Way on the flip side and was released by Atlantic Records.

Frank Gossner: The archaeologist of African vinyl By Tanvi Misra BBC News

A German DJ has become an archaeologist of funk. He travels around Africa searching for old, unwanted and often moulding LPs, gets them reissued and then plays them at his gigs around the world.

It was in the US 10 years ago that Frank Gossner got hooked on African vinyl. He was rifling through a stack of 200 or 300 records from the Nigerian Tabansi record label in Philadelphia, when he came across "a crazy really psychedelic Afrobeat" disc by Ghanaian musician Pax Nicholas.

Vinyl Feature: Bee Gees - Spirits Having Flown

From the kings of vibrato/falsetto this was the BeeGees 15th album and came after their smash hit with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack collaboration. The first three songs on the album went on to become hit singles in most of the Western World, while the album also sold more than 16 million copies.

Spirits Having Flown was officially released on the 5th of February 1979 under the RSO record label.

Where the magic happens!

It still amazes me that the incredibly clear and resonant sound we hear when listening to records is transferred from the teeny tiny little grooves on the vinyl surface by a sharp little pointy diamond tipped "needle" to the amp to the speakers and we hear it as detailed as if we were sitting in the room with the musicians!

Vinyl Feature: Fats Domino - Fats Domino!

There isn't a whole lot of info available about this Fats Domino LP online, but I can tell you that it was released under the Sunset/Liberty Records label and my copy says it was manufactured in the U.S.A.

I think it was produced in the late 60's some time.

The music however is classic Fats Domino and is a good collection of his signature music and sound.

Vinyl Feature: The Best Disco Album In The World

Just in case you ever wondered what the best disco album in the World is, well your wondering days are over because here it is! At least that is what the self proclaimed title says but in reality it's closer to "A Pretty Good Disco Album".

If you like disco this compilation LP has some great disco sounds that will get your feet tapping while you will gradually feel a strange compulsion to wear a skin tight body suit with sparkles all over it. Ah, 70's disco...
